What Can You Learn From a Cat About Life Happiness?

Let’s call the cat Blackie. She might be embarrassed if I used her real name…..or maybe not! She’s a diva, you know. It says so on a pendant she proudly wears dangling from her ladybug print collar.

Blackie is so excited, knowing that this time she gets to accompany her owner, Natalie, for a visit to Houston, Texas to visit her parents.

That would be me and my husband…parents of Natalie, not the cat.

By the way, Blackie is a native Texan…from Corpus Christi, to be exact. Natalie and a friend chased and captured her as a frightened little kitten on the campus of Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi.

Blackie was taken away from her mom and siblings who were all stray cats. With her capture, Blackie was on her way to a better life provided by Natalie, a life that took her to live in California… in places where cats are cherished.

As a native Texan, going back to Texas is really special to Blackie. And, of course, she’s spent long periods of time with us, like after Natalie miraculously survived . , ,

being run over in San Diego by a pickup truck …from Texas!

How ironic is that?

About ten days after the accident, Blackie accompanied us on our long drive from San Diego to Houston and stayed with us during the months Natalie was recuperating.

That meant having the large tire track wound on her abdomen dressed and treated as well as receiving physical therapy to learn how to walk again. Her left femur was broken so she’d had surgery through her knee to insert a long metal rod.

In spite of what her doctors predicted, her recovery was amazing, to say the least.

Since Natalie was going to spend the following semester in Australia, Blackie remained with us when Natalie flew back to San Diego.

During her stay with us, Blackie devoured almost all of the asparagus fern in our atrium. Little did I know that she’d left us a gift until years later when asparagus ferns began sprouting up in our back yard.

Hmm….want to guess how that happened?

So, anyway, back to the story….

Natalie loves to travel and does so quite often. And Blackie is left behind…sad and upset. She’s done a few things to show her displeasure:
–     Ignoring Natalie
–     Not eating
–     Throwing up on Natalie’s suitcase
–     Leaving some smelly ‘gifts’ from her body on the couch and bed

Ready To Go To Texas

Once Blackie knew she was going to Texas with Natalie, her attitude changed. Happiness set in.  She began spending much more time with Natalie.

So by going on the trip, not only would she get to be with Natalie, but I’ll bet she was looking forward to eating asparagus ferns!

And she was unbelievably willling to go to the vet to get certified that she was healthy to travel on an airplane.

Any other time her pet carrier was dragged out of the closet, Blackie put up a fight. She didn’t want to go the vet. That was beneath her dignity, and it was not fun.

I can relate to that, can’t you?

But this time when the pet carrier appeared on the day of the veterinarian appointment, Blackie didn’t run and hide. She allowed Natalie to easily put her in the carrier!

And at the vet’s office here’s what Blackie cheerfully did:

– allowed the nurse to easily take her out of the carrier without attempting to run away

– allowed tartar to be scraped off her teeth

– allowed her body to be examined

– allowed her rear end to be probed
Everyone at the vet’s office was very impressed with Blackie’s behavior. On her chart the nurse wrote:
“Very sweet cat!”  And they said, “She’s like an angel!”

The Day of The Flight

At last, the flight day arrived. . .

When Blackie was in her pet carrier on the plane, the other passengers were amazed to learn that she had not received drugs to keep her calm. Blackie quietly remained in that carrier for hours…

No complaining from her!

I’m telling you, this cat knows how to achieve life happiness!

Do you?

What do you get to do today?

Memorize these lyrics from my song, ‘Uplifted and Inspired’:

Your gift of free will allows you to choose.
You are the master of your attitude.
Choose uplifted and inspired.

And why not let nature help you?

My lyrics from ‘This Sunny Day’ will take you to nature:

Sunny day, sunny day,
The sky’s so blue.
Sunny day, sunny day,
Brings happiness to you.

Refreshing breeze,
Chase my blues away.
Bring me joy to day,
This sunny day, this sunny day.

Lovely flowers send
delightful fragrances to me.
I know that out in nature
is where I should be.

So how exactly does one preserve happiness? Can it be by simply picking only emotions and thoughts that are clean and soothing as well as deciding to be happy? I think Yes.. Happiness is without question a decision and people who decide to be happy are most often the same people who flourish in life and career far more than the someone who is constantly gloomy and chooses to find fault towards other people for their life’s conditions.

Mindy, I’m happy that you found this post so informative. I wrote it so long ago that I read it again so I could see what I wrote. That brought back good memories.
