I commend you if you choose to think good thoughts. That’s what I usually do. But the reality is that sometimes it takes something besides positive thinking to get what you want.
Here’s my story to illustrate that point.
One day while on our usual morning walk in the park, Brian and I walked carefully down the narrow dirt path on a high slope that leads down to the wide paved main pathway below. Since Brian was talking, I didn’t interrupt to remind him that it’s best to walk as quickly as you can on those one lane dirt paths on the slope.
Why did I recommend that?
Because some of the bicyclists in the park ride very fast and with little or no regard for pedestrians. They appear behind you without warning. You don’t even know they’re behind you until they’re suddenly beside you.
And then it happened…
I was halfway down the slope and Brian was maybe 5 feet ahead of me on the very narrow trail when I heard a sound close behind me, like a skid in the dirt. Instinctively I knew it was a bicyclist, so without looking back, I calmly and quickly stepped to the right to get off the trail. And it was just in time to allow the bicyclist to whiz safely past me and then across the wide paved walkway ahead.
When he came to a stop in the grass beyond the pavement, he apologized, “I’m so sorry.”
“All’s well that ends well,” I replied.
But when things aren’t going so well, you might want to remember these lyrics from my song, ‘I Seek Serenity.’
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Serenity is what I seek,
serenity to set me free
to find peace and light.
Help me sleep tonight.
Serenity…. set me free.
I seek serenity.

I’m feeling really blessed and grateful that none of us were injured. The bicyclist wasn’t protected with a helmet, and Brian and I certainly weren’t wearing protective gear just to walk in the park.
Reflecting later on this incident, I remembered how I used to have so many ridiculous minor accidents. Because of those accidents I was on crutches at various times for a sprained ankle, a bruised ankle, an injured foot, etc. I suffered a broken wrist on 3 different occasions and later a broken upper arm, and multiple times I received stitches to close deep wounds.
And that doesn’t even cover all of my injuries and accidents! I was also in a couple of very minor car accidents in which I was the driver. So I considered myself accident-prone and a klutz.
I realize now that it’s not a good idea to label yourself with anything you don’t want to be. I’ve replaced those negative thoughts with positive thoughts and positive affirmations. And my frequent accidents have stopped!
Have you ever called yourself something that you don’t like?
If you did, have you replaced that negativity with positive choices?
What if you declared something like “I intend to be more graceful.”?
So I got a little off track here. But whenever an opportunity arises to help you, I can’t resist.
Now where did I get off track? Oh, yeah, I was going to tell you why sometimes good thoughts aren’t the solution.
What does that have to do with not having an accident with the bicyclist?
Well, what if I never expected that a bicyclist might suddenly and speedily arrive from around a corner behind us to go down the slope?
What if I just thought that the sound behind me was nothing to be concerned about and I remained on the single lane path?
You must not go thru life just singing la la la and not being aware of your surroundings. Without taking the right action, a bad incident can occur. While being aware, Brian and I got out of the way of the cyclist and prevented an accident.
Don’t give up on good thoughts. Use them frequently when appropriate and be aware. And take the right actions.
Now I’m curious…

I’m happy that you agree with me, Steve! Thank you for your comment.
Positive thoughts are good in a way that it increases your self confidence and keep you in focus. However, l do agree with you that not all the time, positive thinking is not the solution. You really have to look at your surrounding, make an assessment and make a solution from you assessment – not just thinking that everything will be fine.
Hi Patrick, I agree with your comment about positive thoughts. Thank you for sharing!
I am not sure what good thoughts mean, but am sure that positive thoughts can heal any pain and assure mental peace for sure, if directed well and on time.
Good advice, Jenic. Thanks for sharing.
Accept the negative and do something to think positive about it. Ignoring the real is no solution. See the real and perceive positively by having good thoughts.
Wise comment, Arianna! Thank you for sharing.
Good thoughts are not the solution when we are ignoring the facts. Accept the facts however painful they may be. Then you may think positive to have a good mental state. Be wise.
Yes, Carol, I agree. Thanks for your comment.
Hi James, Since I don’t know what you’re trying to let go of, I’ll just give you general help.
My suggestions are smiling frequently, meditating, forgiving, being thankful for everything (especially the challenges) and thinking positively as much as possible. Avoid watching or listening to the news because it’s mostly negative. Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.
I hope at least one of these suggestions will help you. Start with just one of them that you aren’t already doing. If it doesn’t help, then try another one.
Good thoughts are not a solution when you should be looking at the other side of the coin and see that things are going wrong. It is wise to see the wrong as wrong and the right as right! You agree Joyce?
Well Jeo, letting go is a great quality. I fail at it. Things keep going on my mind and I lose my peace of mind. Joyce, please suggest what should I go about it. How to let go?
Glad you loved my way of putting up the message! And I love your smiling habit! Thanks for sharing!
You have told great things very simply. I loved your way of putting up the message. I try to think positive and have made one habit. When I dislike things or people, I make a point to smile on their actions and let go. If I do not do this, negativity would accumulate on my mind and I’ll grow distant to those people. It is working for me!
I agree, Jack! Thanks for commenting.
Good thoughts are not the solution when we only think good and not act accordingly. Thoughts should be aligned to our actions right?
Hi Kevin, I agree with you! Thanks for your comment.
I have always been a believer in the power of positive thinking. It all ties into to removing the limitations of the human mind and its inherent spiritual power.
Hi Rana, Thanks for agreeing with me!
Good post. You are very right that positive thoughts also require other skills in addition.
Glad you found my post motivating, Bob! Thanks for your comment.
I found the post very motivating which comes with a special message that we should be prepared to tackle even unforeseen circumstances. Being careful on the road also means we should be aware of where we are walking and who all we’ll be meeting or might bump into, it also means planning. It was a pleasure to learn and extract so much from this post.
